When Consumer Reports tested three lightweight expandable hoses two summers ago we thought they were an acceptable alternative to heavy garden hoses. But as soon as we published the results of our tests we started hearing complaints from our readers and Facebook fans about expandable hoses that burst, split, and leaked. Many said they had returned one, two, or even three hoses to the store. The outcry led manufacturers to upgrade their hoses so, of course, we felt compelled to retest the newest batch. The appeal of an expandable hose is that it’s lighter, easier to handle, and doesn’t take up as much storage space as a conventional hose because when there’s no water in it the hose shrinks down to size. This year, the three original brands we tested came out with models with tougher fittings. The Hawks scored 144 points at the varsity level to beat Prospect (104), Sandburg (82), Rolling Meadows (70), Conant (62) and District 300 (62). Interstellar ice is believed to be a cradle of complex organic compounds, commonly found within icy comets and interstellar clouds, in association with ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and subsequent warming. We found that UV-irradiated amorphous ices composed of H2O, CH3OH, and NH3 and of pure H2O behave like liquids over the temperature ranges of 65 to 150 kelvin and 50 to 140 kelvin, respectively. This low-viscosity liquid-like ice may enhance the formation of organic compounds including prebiotic molecules and the accretion of icy dust to form icy planetesimals under certain interstellar conditions. Water-dominated ice is the most abundant solid component of dense molecular clouds and the outer cold part of protoplanetary disks (1) and must have played a critical role in the formation of gas and icy giants in the early solar system as a dominant component of their building blocks.
