Last month we reviewed the 2012 BMW 328i and found it less than ultimate as driving

Last month we reviewed the 2012 BMW 328i and found it less than ultimate as driving machines go. But the reviewed car was a “Luxury Line” sedan with an automatic transmission. For driving enthusiasts, BMW offers the new F30 with different options, among them a larger engine, a six-speed manual transmission, a “Sport Line” trim level, adaptive dampers, and staggered 19-inch summer tires. Check all of these boxes, and the next M3 might seem superfluous. Or not. Red paint, blacked-out trim, and larger, five-spoke alloys dependably make a car appear sportier. It is somewhat shocking that 19-inch wheels now seem the appropriate size, aesthetically, for a 3-Series. Shod with them, the new car appears as compact as 3s used to be. The previous generation E90 looked good with mere 18s. The next M3 will likely wear dubs. Ever since reading a reader comment on Sajeev’s design critique, I cannot stop noticing the cut line at the leading edge of the hood. BMW’s previous practice of extending the hood all the way to the grille and headlights yielded a much cleaner nose. Inside, the Sport Line is available with black, gray, or red seats, aluminum or black trim, and coral (more red)...

Dominating the performance in the 12V class is one thing, but it defeats the benefits of 12V if you can’t keep the tool compact. Milwaukee does a nice job balance the two with top end performance and mid-pack size and weight. It gets some help from its recent redesign that drops nearly an inch off the length while adding 100 in-lbs of torque to the previous model.  After testing more than 30 impact drivers, there’s wasn’t much question that the Milwaukee M12 Fuel is the highest performing the in the 12V class. After all, Milwaukee is known for having a really deep 12V line that draws comparisons to compact 18V performance. Thieves Stealing 250-Pound Storm Drain Grates All Over City

(Memphis) The Memphis City Department of Public Works is calling it a “major” problem: thieves stealing storm drain grates. When a drain cover is stolen it leaves a hole that is two feet by four feet and it would be easy for children, animals or even grown adults to fall in. “It’s a waste and it`s a safety hazard and the people that do it,  don`t care about anybody else,” said Jim Carter, a Frayser resident. A van pulled-up, two men got out and lifted two 250-pound grates off his street and hauled them away. “No ma’am. We are over 60 years old,” said Turner. “At our age, we don’t pick up anything that looks that heavy.” Public works told us it spends $40,000 a year replacing these stolen grates and the problem is getting worse, 60 to 70 grates are missing every month, 20 or more of them every week. “These recyclers have to know, whether it’s Mississippi or Arkansas, they have to know that these are stolen,” said Turner. The City of Memphis says it plans to add locks to its existing grates soon but hopes to eventually replace all the grates with high-density plastic ones that will be completely worthless to scrap metal dealers. Public works says the thefts...

When it comes time to replace machines, processors want to upgrade their manufacturing facilities without using more of their precious production floor. For most, it’s a matter of maximized space utilization. But for LC Industries Inc., it’s also a matter of maintained logistics for the 350 visually impaired and blind employees who are part of the 750-person workforce. Originally named Lions Club Industries for the Blind Inc. after the civic group that founded the nonprofit corporation in 1936, LCI is one of the largest U.S. employers of people who are blind. Based in Durham, N.C., the company has seven manufacturing divisions, including one that produces plastic products ranging from desk accessories to mop parts with an extruder, a 30-year-old blow molding machine and 20 injection molding presses. Called the Improved B30, the decades-old blow molder makes five-gallon high density polyethylene water jugs for LCI’s 35 retail outlets and online store. Company officials visited NPE2018 in Orlando, Fla., to find a replacement for the old press. They said it was just as important to grab a tape measure as the checkbook in their effort to boost output in a compact ...

TE Connectivity Introduces Three Fine-Pitch Board-to-Board Connectors for IoT, Smartphones and Wearable Devices

TE Connectivity (TE), a world leader in connectivity, today introduced three new board-to-board (BTB) connectors, including the 0.4 mm fine-pitch EMI (electromagnetic interference) shielded board-to-FPC (flexible printed circuit) connector, 0.4 mm pitch board-to-board connector and 0.35 mm pitch board-to-board connector with a locking peg design — new additions to its board-to-board product portfolio for Internet of Things (IoT), smartphones, wearables and other mobile devices. These three products are designed to address the smartphone manufacturers’ requirements for a super-slim, low-profile BTB solution. “Our 0.4 mm fine-pitch EMI shielded board-to-FPC connector utilizes a unique spring contact and latching shield to enable a lower profile and smaller footprint than traditional FPC solutions,” said Eric Himelright, vice president of internal interconnect, TE Data and Devices. “Its unique design with locking shield helps our customers lower the overall profile height of their devices, simplify their reliability testing and mitigate EMI concerns.” “The 0.4 mm and 0.35 mm BTB connectors have a multiple contact point system to ensure reliable mating and a contac...

12 Badass Overland Accessories for Your Hunting Truck

My grandfather’s hunting truck was a 1971 two-wheel-drive, Chevrolet pickup truck with a Positraction rear end. His only modification was a handmade, plywood camper top. It had a shelf in the back for us kids to sleep on, multiple hooks to tie up coon hounds, and a roll down canvas cover for the back window. Times have changed. If you know where to look, you can perfectly customize your hunting rig to crawl rockslides, ford rivers, and provide damn near five-star accommodations in the field. Here are a dozen aftermarket accessories priced from $100 to $65,000 to trick out your hunting rig. With the Tailgater Tire Table, you can use your tires productively even while they’re not rolling. This clever device mounts on your truck, SUV, or car tire and provides you with a sturdy table. With no tools required, you can attach this less-than-14-pound, 23×29-inch platform to your truck tire in seconds. It will hold up to 50 pounds so you can use it for meals, processing game, to hold a cooler, or for your toolbox while you work on your broken-down hunting truck. It’s a must for hunting SUVs that do not have tailgates, and it retails for $140. Regardless of what kind of tires you mig...

103 Straight-Up Genius Things Under $40 On Amazon Prime

I usually have a “magic number” of sorts when I’m shopping. That magic number is the amount I’m willing to spend on something, knowing I won’t have to feel nervous the next time I open my banking app if I buy it. This becomes even more important when I’m shopping for multiple people (think: birthdays and holidays) since I’m wanting to invest in quality products (i.e. don’t want to look cheap) for prices that aren’t astronomical (i.e. don’t want to go broke). For me, all these genius things under $40 on Amazon totally fall into that “magic number” category. Of course, not all the products on this list reach all the way up to $40. A lot of them are quite a bit cheaper, like the dramatically lengthening $5 dollar mascara that’ll make it look like you went to the trouble of applying falsies or the $12 milk frother so you can make cappuccinos at home. Best of all, every single one of these products is available on Amazon Prime, which means free two-day shipping — perfect for those of us who are procrastinators, as well as those of us who are dead set against going above our magic numbers. Since it’s t...

Rotorigami: A rotary origami protective system for robotic rotorcraft

Applications of aerial robots are progressively expanding into complex urban and natural environments. Despite remarkable advancements in the field, robotic rotorcraft is still drastically limited by the environment in which they operate. Obstacle detection and avoidance systems have functionality limitations and substantially add to the computational complexity of the onboard equipment of flying vehicles. Furthermore, they often cannot identify difficult-to-detect obstacles such as windows and wires. Robustness to physical contact with the environment is essential to mitigate these limitations and continue mission completion. However, many current mechanical impact protection concepts are either not sufficiently effective or too heavy and cumbersome, severely limiting the flight time and the capability of flying in constrained and narrow spaces. Therefore, novel impact protection systems are needed to enable flying robots to navigate in confined or heavily cluttered environments easily, safely, and efficiently while minimizing the performance penalty caused by the protection method. Here, we report the development of a protection system for robotic rotorcraft consisting of a fr...

Our Existence Is Political: The Undercroft, a sober, all-ages venue builds community in Remington

Steph Joyal saw the words posted outside Remington’s Church of the Guardian Angel — “UNDERCROFT FOR RENT.” It was late 2017 and Joyal was a comedian working as a dog walker, but they had an idea which until that moment had been a more distant idea for them, like learning Japanese: To create an inclusive arts space which doubled as a community hub and avoided the many problems, organizationally and culturally, that marred many of the clubs and spaces around Baltimore. “I’m just a random comedian who isn’t even out as trans yet being like we’ve gotta do something about these shitty, shitty venues,” they said, thinking back to summer 2016 when the idea was first percolating. After seeing the sign, Joyal googled “undercroft” and found out that it’s a word that has been used since the middle ages to refer to a cellar or storage space beneath a church. When they reached out to the church to ask for a tour of the undercroft, they didn’t know what they’d find inside. “I had no idea what was down here at all,” Joyal said. “I had no idea how big it was. I only saw the sign.” A member of Guardian Angel’s vestry gave them a tour. What they found was a far cry from a weird little basement: A...
