Singapore Airport, Airlines Piloting Handheld RFID Reader – 2019-09-13 – Page 1

Numerous airlines are deploying or piloting a UHF RFID-enabled handheld device that can be used with a smartphone and then be charged with that phone on a single charging device. The compact reader, provided by Koamtac, is intended to allow airlines to track baggage handling and logistics in order to understand where their tagged luggage or parcels are as they are checked in, loaded onto aircraft and then unloaded. The device is currently in use by parcel handlers at Singapore’s Changi Airport. To meet the growing demand for UHF readers by airlines, as well as in logistics environments, the company plans to release a Ring and Glove scanner this fall that will fit over two fingers and can be worn like a glove. Koamtac has develop UHF RFID technology into its existing KBC 470 barcode scanner so that companies whose personnel scan barcodes (such as warehouse workers, logistics providers and baggage handlers) can add UHF functionality without having to upgrade the entire technology. 13.56mhz Anti-Metal Gas Tags As the demand for visibility into logistics and inventory management has evolved, with more passive HF and UHF RFID-based tracking solutions, the company opted to provi...

New record set for world’s most heat resistant material | Imperial News

Researchers have discovered that tantalum carbide and hafnium carbide materials can withstand scorching temperatures of nearly 4000 degrees Celsius. In particular, the team from Imperial College London discovered that the melting point of hafnium carbide is the highest ever recorded for a material. Being able to withstand temperatures of nearly 4000°C could pave the way for both materials to be used in ever more extreme environments, such as in heat resistant shielding for the next generation of hypersonic space vehicles. Tantalum carbide (TaC) and hafnium carbide (HfC) are refractory ceramics, meaning they are extraordinarily resistant to heat. Their ability to withstand extremely harsh environments means that refractory ceramics could be used in thermal protection systems on high-speed vehicles and as fuel cladding in the super-heated environments of nuclear reactors. However, there hasn’t been the technology available to test the melting point of TaC and HfC in the lab to determine how truly extreme an environment they could function in. The researchers of the study, which is published in the journal Scientific Reports, developed a new extreme heating technique using lasers t...

Oktoberfest in numbers: An inside look at Germany’s multi-billion business

Oktoberfest, also known as Wiesn, attracts millions of people from all over the world (even Barack Obama has said he would love to go) who come to drink beer and celebrate the good times in Munich, the capital of Bavaria. So it’s not surprising that the attraction, which first took place more than 200 years ago, has grown into a billion-euro enterprise. How did Oktoberfest start? It dates back to 1810. Crown Prince Ludwig, later to become King Ludwig I, was married to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on October 12th, 1810. The citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities held on the fields in front of the city gates to celebrate the happy royal event. The fields have been named Theresienwiese (“Theresa’s fields”) in honour of the Crown Princess ever since, although the locals have since abbreviated the name simply to the “Wiesn”. Horse races in the presence of the Royal family marked the close of the event that was celebrated as a festival for the whole of Bavaria. The decision to repeat the horse races in the subsequent year led to the tradition of Oktoberfest. Munich’s economy generated more than €1.2 billion tha...

What grocery stores won’t tell you about plastic

It’s next to impossible to be a plastic-free grocery shopper. Unless you live near a boutique store that offers goods naked, you likely don’t have much choice about buying food wrapped in plastic netting or transparent film.  Walk into any of the biggest grocery chains in the United States, and you’ll see row upon row of items in containers and bags that are designed to be used once and trashed. Americans produced 14.7 million tons of such waste in 2015, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Of that, only 14.6% was recycled.  12 PHOTOS Families limit their plastic use See Gallery Families limit their plastic use A combination photo shows Natalia Lyritsis, (L), 5, Alexandra Patrikiou, (2nd L), 39, Alice Lyritsis, (2nd R), 3, and Vassilis Lyritsis, (R), 46 (top) and one week’s worth of plastic waste they have collected, in Athens, Greece, May 24, 2018. “We recycle plastic, paper, glass etc… and try to buy products made from recycled materials. (ROBYN… [+] BECK/AFP/Getty Images) The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is probably the world’s biggest show when it comes to new TV technologies: No wonder, that’s how the event got its start more than 50 years ago, with televisions, radios, microphones, headsets, etc. And this year is no different with all the major TV manufacturers in the planet showing their latest generation sets that will ship in the next few months—some next year and some never—including Foxconn/Sharp, Hisense/Toshiba, LG, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, TCL or Vizio. Dumping duty imposed on certain float glass imports from China

The Finance Ministry has imposed definitive anti-dumping duty on certain float glass imports from China. This follows recommendations of the Designated Authority in the Commerce Ministry in its second sunset review investigations on certain float glass imports from China and Indonesia. The Revenue Department has now imposed anti-dumping duty of $ 218 per tonne on certain float glass imports from China. This duty will be valid for five years. This anti-dumping duty has been levied on float glass of thickness 2 mm to 12 mm (both thickness inclusive) of clear as well as tinted variety (other than green glass). It however does not include reflective glass, and processed glass meant for decorative, industrial or automotive purposes. While recommending that anti-dumping duty be continued on certain float glass imports from China for the next five years, the Designated Authority also recommended withdrawal of existing duties against Indonesia. The Designated Authority saw no credible evidence on the likelihood of continuation or recurrence of dumping from Indonesia. The petition seeking sunset review investigations was filed by Saint-Gobain Glass India Ltd, HNG Ltd, and Gold Plus Glas...
