Early adopters of LED lighting will remember 50,000 hour or even 100,000 hour lifetime ratings printed on the box. But during a recent trip to the hardware store the longest advertised lifetime I found was 25,000 hours. Others claimed only 7,500 or 15,000 hours. And yes, these are brand-name bulbs from Cree and GE. So, what happened to those 100,000 hour residential LED bulbs? Were the initial estimates just over-optimistic? Was it all marketing hype? Or, did we not know enough about LED aging to predict the true useful life of a bulb? I put these questions to the test. Join me after the break for some background on the light bulb cartel from the days of incandescent bulbs (not a joke, a cartel controlled the life of your bulbs), and for the destruction of some modern LED bulbs to see why the lifetimes are clocking in a lot lower than the original wave of LED replacements. Any discussion of light bulb lifetime would be incomplete without mention of the Phoebus cartel, an international organization formed in 1924 by the world’s leading light bulb manufacturers to manipulate the bulb market. As discussed by Markus Krajewski in “The Great Lightbulb Conspiracy”, the cartel assigned ...

Chinese component-maker Holitech Technology has inaugurated its first manufacturing plant in India. The company will invest

Chinese component-maker Holitech Technology has inaugurated its first manufacturing plant in India. The company will invest about $200 million in India over three years to make parts such as compact camera modules, capacitive touch screen modules, thin film transistors, flexible printed circuits and and fingerprint modules. Holitech was first invited to explore investment opportunities in India by Xiaomi, for whom Holitech is a supplier. “The local manufacturing plant is ready. It will be in production by third quarter of 2019 and aims to generate 6,000 jobs in three years,” Xiaomi said in a statement. The plant in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, is spread across four factories over 25,000 sq.m. It will start with a production capacity of more than 300 million components per year. In August last year, Holitech Technology signed an MoU to set up a production facility in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, at an investment of $200 million. However, the company’s plan with regard to this plant is unclear. “The State of Uttar Pradesh has extended several incentives for the establishment of the manufacturing plants as per UP Electronics Manufacturing Policy,” the statement added. Deputy Chief Mi...

This weather feature is so significant it can take us from highs in the 100s one

This weather feature is so significant it can take us from highs in the 100s one day to 70s the next.  Let’s start here. The valley warms quicker than air over the ocean. This creates a big temperature difference. The warmer valley air is less dense and rises. The cooler marine air is denser and sinks. In order for the atmosphere to even out that temperature difference, it will “pull” the cool air inland toward the warm air. This brings that huge relief in hot temperatures. All this is happening in a transition area between the Bay Area and the valley called the delta, thus the name Delta Breeze. It’s lower than the surrounding area, so it’s like taking that cool air and shooting it through a tunnel until it reaches the valley and can spread out. Commercial Air Cooler Alright, that’s here on the ground. The other big part of this is what’s happening way up there in the atmosphere that helps to get that cooler breeze to the valley. This is usually a low in the North Pacific. It has a counterclockwise spin that starts that flow from the Pacific to the valley. Niskanen Hopes to Be ‘Partner’ for Flyers ‘Young Studs’ on Defense

The NHL offseason officially began less than 48 hours ago and it didn’t take long for Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher to go to work. He acquired defenseman Matt Niskanen from the Washington Capitals for defenseman Radko Gudas. Technically, this was the second trade of the offseason for Fletcher, who acquired the rights to free-agent forward Kevin Hayes on June 3. A deal still needs to get done before June 23 for Hayes, or he can begin to speak and negotiate with other teams ahead of free agency opening on July 1. Unlike that deal, which doesn’t guarantee Hayes suits up for the Orange and Black, Niskanen is going to definitely be a part of the Flyers in 2019-20. He has two years remaining on his contract with a cap hit of $5.75 million. The Flyers also retained 30 percent of Gudas’ $3.35 million cap hit next season. On the surface, the deal made little sense for the Flyers, who are gambling on Niskanen returning to his 2013-17 form — he was a valuable piece and leader on the Capitals Stanley Cup team in 2017-18 — after a down season in 2018-19. Perhaps playing for a new team after five seasons in Washington will be able to bring the 32-year-old defenseman back to his form. ...

It’s been a little longer than planned since my first field test of the Pentax K-1 II, as life’s been something of a rollercoaster for your humble editor of late, and I’m only just now digging my way out of a backlog. That’s been entirely down to me, though, (sorry!) and isn’t a knock on the camera itself in any respect. In fact, we’ve been impressed enough with the Pentax K-1 II that we recently named it a Camera of Distinction in the Best Professional Camera category of our 2018 Camera of the Year awards. So believe me when I say that, when I’ve managed to get out and shoot with it, I’ve continued to greatly enjoy the experience of using this camera. (For still images, at least; it’s not really aimed at videographers as we’ll discuss in a moment.) When I filed my first field test, I’d intended to foll...

Bird watching: Knoxville is spot for bald eagles, blue herons, others

Bald eagles and great blue herons have had enhanced numbers because of the suitable conditions for a habitat. This conversation is moderated according to USA TODAY’s community rules. Please read the rules before joining the discussion. The 65-year-old Nicholson, author of the 1997 book “Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Tennessee,” said the location is a jackpot when it comes to birds. “East Tennessee is in between the Atlantic flyway and the Mississippi flyway,” Nicholson said. “This is a migration corridor in the spring and fall. There are so many different types of habitats in the area. You’ve got the lakes and you’ve got the Smokies.” Nicholson, a part-time consultant who lives in Norris after 39 years at TVA, said the birds on the move right now are waterfowl. “Starting in late February, ducks and other waterfowl that spent the winter in East Tennessee are moving north,” he said. “From what I can tell, they’re right on schedule.” Dr. Chuck Nicholson has followed the migration of birds in East Tennessee for more than four decades. (Photo: Submitted) The record-setting rainfall of more than 13 inches in February had no impact on the birds, at least in terms of their motiv...

RevoNext QT5 review: This in-ear monitor offers tremendous bang for very few bucks

Many smartphones come with earbuds that let you privately listen to music stored or streamed on the device. Many consumers regard those stock earbuds with disdain, however, claiming their sound quality is simply not good. For them, buying a set of third-party earbuds—or, even better, a set of in-ear monitors (IEMs)—is an easy way to improve the quality of the sound they hear. Swedish company RevoNext is one of many makers of IEMs. Within its lineup is the QT5, which offers several high-end features for a decidedly bargain price. Even better, the sound quality far exceeds what you’d expect for so little moolah. For those who aren’t completely familiar with the terms, let’s start with the difference between earbuds and in-ear monitors (IEMs, also called in-ear headphones). Both include tiny speaker-like transducers that convert electrical audio signals into sound. Earbuds sit in the “bowl” (concha) of the outer ear at the entrance to the ear canal, while IEMs extend into the canal. Also, IEMs strive to seal the canal opening, while earbuds do not. This lets earbud users hear more of the outside world, but sealing the ear canal greatly improves the so...

Many have tried building a free energy-producing magnetic motor. I am seeing a lot  in my daily quest through alternative energy news, but what I have learned is that energy is not free, perpetual motion machines do not exist, everything is taken from somewhere and put elsewhere. There also is this so-called “free energy”, the zero-point energy, proven mathematically by many scientists. My duty as a green optimistic is to collect everything I see someone has struggled explaining and demonstrating, put it in one place and let the people see and comment. Such is the example of this magnetic motor. But there are also “green pessimistic” websites. When they see something out of “common sense” boundaries, they freak out and scream something like”omg, this can’t be real! I need no proof! I must not think of this! Perish, Satan!” I took such an article today as an inspiration because it talks about a magnetic motor, one of my favorite free energy topics, about which I haven’t heard much lately. Here is the whole process of transforming the free magnetic energy into mechanical energy, explained by the invention’s author (Sandeep Acharya): “Think of Two Powerful Magnets. One fixed plate...
